About the Harrisburg Guild of the CMA

Our Mission Statement

Our Mission Statement is in accord with that of the National Catholic Medical Association and is part of our Constitutions.

1. To uphold the principles of the Catholic faith and morality as related to the science and practice of medicine.

2. To cooperate in leading the Christian Community, especially with the particular medical expertise and experience of Catholic physicians, to understand, develop, and apply the principles of Catholic faith and morality to the science and practice of medicine.

3. To lead the Christian community in the work of communicating Catholic Medical Ethics to the medical profession and the community-at-large.

4. To uphold Catholic hospitals in the application of Catholic moral principles in medical practice.

5. To enable Catholic physicians to know one another better and to work together with deeper mutual support and understanding.

All activities of the Guild shall be conducted in accordance with and in submission to the teaching authority of the magisterium of the Catholic Church.

About the Annual White Mass

History of White Mass

The tradition of the White Mass in the United States finds its origins in the development of the national Catholic Medical Association in the early 1930s. From its inception, the medical profession has been understood as a healing profession, a way in which Christ’s work continues upon the earth.

Moreover, since the apparitions at Lourdes in the late 19th century, the plight of the infirmed, and those who care for them, have taken on renewed appreciation in participating in the mysteries of Christ’s own life.

The White Mass, so named by the color worn by those in the healing profession, gathers health care professionals under the patronage of St. Luke to ask God’s blessing upon patient, doctor, nurse, and caregiver alike.
